Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many regions, not enough pupils are choosing to study science at universities. There can be numerous causes for this, for example interests. However, it affects our society in different ways.

To begin with, many students prefer to study science because of their keen interests in it. They have interests in it and prefer to study science in their schools, colleges and universities which yields substantial benefits for their future. It would open new opportunities for them in terms of jobs like doctors, scientists and so on. Moreover, it would help them to learn real-life problems and can learn basic health-related cure problems. Further, it would help them to learn basic healthcare methods to stay fit and different foods which are beneficial for their body. Additionally, studying science would also help pupils to sharp their mind by learning formulas and by doing experiments, they would become more creative and productive.

However, majority of the students prefer to learn other subjects like politics, business studies or history in schools rather than science. Undoubtedly, they also plays vital role in our society, but there are some drawbacks also. As the number of students learning science are less, it would reduce the number of doctors in future. It also exerts detrimental influence on our society as science universities will lack learners. For instance, individuals who will fall ill would have no doctors to cure their sickness and it may also cause death. Furthermore, it would also affects the lifestyle of the people. Mankind would live a sedentary lifestyle and it would become the major catalyst for issues like stress and depression.

In conclusion, as pupils are rely on studying other subjects than science can have a monumental impact on our society also. However, other subjects also yields positive outcomes to our society, all the subjects should be learned in a balanced way.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt—causes and effects—but the development is inconsistent. The first body paragraph is largely irrelevant, as it discusses why students *do* choose science rather than addressing the causes of why they *do not*. The second body paragraph addresses the effects, but the arguments are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the claim that a lack of science students will lead to a lack of doctors is a valid point, but the connection to a 'sedentary lifestyle' and 'stress' is not clearly explained or linked to the decline in science education. To improve, ensure every sentence directly answers the prompt's specific questions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or misused. For example, the transition 'To begin with' is used to introduce a paragraph that contradicts the prompt's premise. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where 'as pupils are rely on' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. While there is a logical progression of ideas, the internal coherence within paragraphs is weakened by the lack of clear, logical links between the causes and the subsequent effects.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There is some repetition of basic words like 'science', 'students', and 'society'. Some word choices are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'sharp their mind' instead of 'sharpen their minds' and 'cure problems' instead of 'health issues'. While the meaning is clear throughout, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic collocations that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'they also plays vital role'), article usage, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'as pupils are rely on'). While the meaning is usually understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct verb forms and prepositions.
