IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Education plays a crucial part in everybody's life. These days, it has been seen that in many nations, a very small chunk of students opt science as a career choice. I believe this could lead to a lot of issues in development of a whole society in sectors such as engineering and health care.
One of the major cause behind students not choosing science is that it demands a rigorous amount of hard work, patience, and is also very expensive, which demotivates students from choosing science. Also, in some institutions, a lack of resources can also affect the choice of an individual. Bad teaching staff and deficiency of practical visualization of experiments pushes the students to either drop out of curriculum or completely losing interest in a particular scientific field. For instance, when I was growing up in, I hated science only because it was all theory and no practical.
The effects of this shortage of science students on society is quite dangerous. If the bars constantly goes down, then in coming years, companies will face to find adequate engineers to work in their organizations, which further leads in slowing down the scientific advancement in a country. Health-related organizations such as hospitals will face absence of doctors and nurses, triggering even a bigger issue.
Overall, the decline in science students in universities can result in a number of chaotic problems in society. However, the government can try to solve this by organizing webinars and lowering the tuition fees a bit for students who actually want to study science, and also by encouraging practical education in schools.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and effects. The ideas are relevant, such as the high cost of education and the potential shortage of healthcare professionals. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'bad teaching staff' is mentioned but not fully explored. The conclusion introduces new suggestions (webinars, tuition fees) which were not asked for in the prompt, making the response slightly unbalanced. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported with more detailed explanation or evidence rather than just listing factors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for causes and effects, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One of the major cause,' 'Also,' and 'For instance.' However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'If the bars constantly goes down.' The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved to sound more natural. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common phrases like 'rigorous amount of hard work' and 'scientific advancement.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'small chunk of students' (a small proportion/percentage) and 'deficiency of practical visualization' (lack of practical application). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. Improving collocations would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'One of the major cause' (should be 'causes'), 'opt science' (should be 'opt for science'), and 'If the bars constantly goes down' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'leads in slowing down' should be 'leads to a slowdown.' While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve accuracy.
