Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 120 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While you identify some reasons for the lack of interest in science, such as the difficulty of mathematical concepts and the appeal of other fields, the discussion of the effects on society is entirely missing. To achieve a higher band, you must fully develop all parts of the prompt, including the consequences of this trend, and ensure the essay meets the length requirement to allow for sufficient depth and supporting examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into two short paragraphs, but the lack of a clear introduction and conclusion hinders the overall structure. While you use some cohesive devices like 'One of the colossal reasons' and 'Furthermore', the progression of ideas is limited by the brevity of the response. The paragraphing is also problematic, as the essay is essentially a single block of text. To improve, ensure each main idea is developed in its own paragraph with clear topic sentences and logical transitions between points.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and contains frequent spelling errors, such as 'numerious', 'deciplines', 'colosal', 'formulaes', 'buissness', 'percieve', 'gradutes', 'deceplines', and 'persue'. These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader. While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'STEM' and 'analytical skills', the range is not sufficient to demonstrate flexibility. Focus on proofreading your work to correct basic spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise academic collocations to enhance your lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('some individuals finds') and article usage. The sentence structures are relatively simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with many sentences starting with lowercase letters. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct capitalization and subject-verb agreement, before attempting more complex structures. Increasing the variety of sentence types will also help improve your score in this criterion.
