In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

in so much countries not enough students are choosing to study science related field at college or university. so that is very much true but it is obvious.

science is subject that demands very high level of thinking and passions that most of the students don't have, I think that Is the main reason for that.

sometimes the students with inferior IQ and passions choose science but at last they do not conquer what they expect , that is actually good because a student who take science is lead to be scientist or engineer and we all know cause of a bad engineer. whatever but if number of students who take science were extremely low that is very significant problem to that country because the financial and academic and economic growth is dependent on them.

but in some countries the passing criteria and the competition is very high that being some the reason for low student in science because they are scared of being a failure and unemployable.

in conclusion, there are many reason to not choose the science stream but I think the main reason is because of the subject it self demands very high concentration and hardwork that most of student don't give. but that lead to very serious problem to that country's economic and academic health and wealth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt (causes and effects), but the development is insufficient. The ideas are presented in a very simplistic manner, and the word count is below the 250-word minimum, which negatively impacts the depth of the argument. For example, the explanation regarding 'inferior IQ' is not only logically weak but also lacks the necessary academic tone and supporting evidence required for a higher band. The conclusion is repetitive and does not effectively synthesize the points made. To improve, you must expand on your ideas with specific examples and ensure you meet the length requirement to allow for full development of your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. While there are some attempts at cohesive devices (e.g., 'in conclusion', 'but'), they are used in a somewhat mechanical or repetitive way. The transition between the causes and the effects is abrupt, and the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks logical flow. For instance, the second paragraph jumps from the difficulty of the subject to a personal opinion about student intelligence without a clear link. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive, which restricts your ability to convey complex ideas. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'very much true', 'very high level', and 'very serious problem'. There are also instances of awkward word choices, such as 'conquer what they expect' instead of 'achieve their goals' or 'meet expectations'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and collocations. For example, instead of 'not enough students', you could use 'a decline in enrollment' or 'a shortage of students'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. There are consistent issues with articles (e.g., 'in so much countries', 'a student who take science'), subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'most of student don't give'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are simple or contain run-on structures that lack proper punctuation. While you attempt some complex ideas, the lack of control over basic grammar prevents these from being expressed clearly. Focusing on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like pluralization and verb tense consistency is essential.
