Student answer (Band 6.0)

Most of the university students are not choosing to study science in may countries because of some reasons and interest in other subjects. It causes some effects on the society and also on there country's economy. In coming paragraphs i discuss the reasons and give my opinions according to my knowledge and experience.

Firstly, I would like to give some students thoughts on choosing other subjects they feel science as a very difficult subject than others. Subjects like physics, chemistry, biology require too much study and attention that is why they choose fields that are easier and easy to understand also they give them more and better opportunities for well paid jobs. For example nowadays young people choose careers in business, it, and marketing because in future they think they will have better opportunities in these fields. In contrast science fields takes too much time and years of study to get you well paid job.

This trend can have several negative effects on society. Firstly shortage in science students may lead to lack in doctors, engineers and researchers that are so much important in any country. They will have less technological development than other countries. For instance countries need skilled workers and researchers to develop and find new solutions for medicine and for environmental problems. If fewer young people enters in scientific fields there may be fewer people working on new technologies and discoveries, which may have seriously affect the economic growth of the country.

In conclusion young students choose easier fields that they find more growth opportunities and well paid jobs in the future while science fields are difficult and this trend can lead to shortage of skilled professionals workers and slower scientific and technological progress in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (perceived difficulty of science and better career prospects in other fields) and effects (shortage of professionals and slower technological progress). The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why science is 'difficult' could be expanded with more specific examples beyond just mentioning physics and chemistry. The position is clear throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to provide more nuanced arguments and deeper analysis of the societal impacts, rather than just listing them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In contrast', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the phrase 'some reasons and interest in other subjects' in the introduction is slightly vague. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'technological development', 'scientific fields', and 'economic growth'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing or word choice, such as 'shortage in science students' (should be 'shortage of') and 'professional workers' (redundant). The student relies on simpler vocabulary, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic collocations that would elevate the score to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('science fields takes', 'young people enters'), articles ('in may countries', 'in future'), and prepositions ('on there country's economy'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the score.
