Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the modern world, the number of students choosing science as a subject in universities are decreasing at a concerning rate. Due to this society is facing numerous problems. In this essay I am going to state some major reasons and what effects can it bring to society in the future. At last I will provide a conclusion and give a opinion from my knowledge.

To begin with, there are many causes why science is ignored by modern generation and find difficult to select science as a subject to study. First major reason I think is that, nowadays, science is only taught in classes and teachers only give theoretical knowledge rather then experiments, science is a practical based subject and if someone want to learn science then it has to be learnt by doing experiments. Furthermore, most universities do not have proper teaching infrastructure like science lab, experiments lab, insect lab etc. However, motivation plays an important role in students decision whether they should choose science of not, mostly they are demotivated by society by saying science is very difficult to study.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 182 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay introduces the topic and mentions causes, it fails to address the second part of the prompt—the effects on society—entirely. The essay is incomplete, as it stops abruptly after discussing causes. Because the task is not fully addressed and the length is insufficient, the response is limited in its ability to demonstrate a clear position or provide supporting evidence. To improve, you must ensure all parts of the question are answered and expand your arguments with specific examples to meet the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into an introduction and one body paragraph, but the lack of a conclusion and the incomplete nature of the response hinder overall coherence. While there are some attempts at cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'First', and 'Furthermore', the progression of ideas is interrupted by the premature ending. Paragraphing is present, but the structure is underdeveloped due to the missing sections. To improve, ensure you have a clear introduction, at least two distinct body paragraphs addressing both parts of the prompt, and a concluding summary.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally functional but limited. You use basic terms like 'problems', 'reasons', and 'difficult'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'science is a practical based subject' (should be 'practice-based') and 'science of not' (should be 'science or not'). The range is sufficient for basic communication but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and precise terminology related to education and societal impact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains several grammatical errors that affect clarity. For instance, 'the number of students... are decreasing' should be 'is decreasing' (subject-verb agreement). There are also punctuation issues, such as run-on sentences and comma splices, for example: 'science is a practical based subject and if someone want to learn science then it has to be learnt by doing experiments.' The range of structures is limited, relying mostly on simple or compound sentences. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and practice using complex sentence structures with accurate subordinating conjunctions.
