In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The study of science is complicated as it has various pathways in the human bodies and the information is quite complex and to study science is not as easy it looks because you have to memorise a lot of things at a same time , there are values and numbers that have to be memorised as it is so it requires a lot of efforts and took energy to study scientific terms that’s why people most people ignore this field because scientific studies require a lot of time and energy that’s why MBBS is not considered as the easy task because if you’re pursuing your scientific studies you have put all other activities aside to get succeed in this field, and off course job opportunities in this field is a great challenge to get however students think it’s better to have some different field in which they feel freedom and it has not as long as science degrees are because people always go for the emerging fields as they want to get successful as soon as possible to get themselves stable financially and science education is quite expensive as well and research is not a cup of tea of everybody as it requires a lot of patience and struggles are much more than any other degree so everyone want to be succeed at the earliest and the truth is that people think in this field there is no career options so they look around other courses which is less time taking.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt—causes and effects—but the development is weak. The essay is written as a single, long paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. While you mention causes like the complexity of the subject and the high cost of education, the discussion on the effects on society is underdeveloped and lacks specific examples or depth. The ideas are presented in a repetitive manner, and the lack of a clear structure prevents a thorough exploration of the topic. To improve, you should separate your ideas into distinct paragraphs and provide more detailed explanations for each point.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay lacks paragraphing entirely, which is a significant issue for coherence. The text consists of a single, run-on sentence structure that makes it difficult to identify where one idea ends and another begins. There is a lack of cohesive devices; instead, the text relies heavily on the repetitive use of 'and' and 'that’s why' to link clauses. This creates a mechanical and disjointed flow. To reach a higher band, you must use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, and employ a wider variety of linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition'.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic phrases like 'a lot of', 'easy task', and 'get successful'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'research is not a cup of tea of everybody' and 'put all other activities aside to get succeed'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is not sufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. You should aim to use more precise academic terminology and avoid informal or clichéd expressions to improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The essay is essentially one long, run-on sentence. There is a lack of punctuation, which makes the text difficult to read and obscures the grammatical relationships between ideas. You rely on simple sentence structures and struggle with complex sentence formation. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'job opportunities... is a great challenge') and word order. To improve, focus on using full stops to separate independent clauses and practice using subordinating conjunctions like 'although', 'because', and 'while' to create more complex and accurate sentence structures.
