IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries, students are becoming less keen on studying science at university. This occurs due to the fact that, there are lack of resources in classrooms & labs and cost of learning science increasing day by day. This phenomenon has a great impact in our society in terms of having less science graduates in future and will also hinder future innovation in the field of science.
Most students choose to study other subjects compared to science because the institutions are not able to provide proper facilities to the students. This is due to the fact that, lack of government funding in the universities. Therefore, the authorities are unable to provide proper equipment and lab facilities to the students. Furthermore, educational institutions are imposing large sum of tuition fee for teaching science to facilitate this external subsidy. That's why students are losing interest in terms choosing science as their major. For instance recently in our country, due to the shortage of government funding, many universities has increased their tuition fee to almost double the amount compared to the past.
This lack of interest of studying science have several effect in our society. Firstly, This will result in a small number graduate who are specialized in the field of science in future. Consequently, this will impact largely on the innovation of modern technologies and research. This will not only impact our current generation but also leave a harsh reality for the future generation. Secondly, there will be less number of research in the field of science as there are not enough graduates to do so. For example, a recent survey shows that, students in my country are choosing to research in other fields rather in science related subjects.
In conclusion, government needs to allow enough funding to university authorities to provide necessary resources to regain the interest of students about studying science or it will have a big impact in our society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (lack of funding, high tuition) and effects (fewer graduates, hindered innovation). The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the second paragraph focuses heavily on funding, and the third paragraph repeats the idea of 'fewer graduates' twice. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on the consequences with more diverse examples, such as the economic impact or the reliance on foreign expertise, rather than restating the same point in different ways.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate causes from effects. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Therefore', and 'Consequently' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'facilitate this external subsidy', which is unclear in context. Improving the flow between sentences would help the essay move from a Band 6 to a Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'tuition fee', 'innovation', and 'specialized'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'big impact' and 'lack of' are used frequently. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid informal phrasing like 'That's why'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms will help demonstrate a wider range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'there are lack of resources', 'many universities has increased', 'this lack of interest... have several effect'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as unnecessary commas after 'fact that'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your score.
