IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's contemporary world, students in numerous regions are not opting science as subject at university. The interest in university-level science stems from inadequate foundational behaviour and lack of clear career path, the phenomena that ultimately threatens public health infrastructure and comprises national economic competitiveness.

To begin with, students are not choosing science as a subject at university-level due to the lack of proper foundation about future decision and clear career path. This happens because schools do not provide proper career counselling to students, which can help them to understand corporate world and about the society. Moreover, the insufficient knowledge about science in children can lead to ignorance of the subject as-well. For example, if a student from private school never got proper knowledge about science and what opportunities it provides, they will generally try to avoid it.

Additionally, neglecting science at the university level can have profound societal ramifications. Overlooking this discipline often triggers severe economic volatility, steering a nation toward financial and developmental stagnation. Because scientifically literate youth form the backbone of a modern state, a dwindling number of STEM candidates inevitably results in a critical deficit of industrial innovation and infrastructure progression. Consequently, the country risks losing its competitive edge on the global stage, crippling both its economic vitality and its capacity for progressive social reform.

In conclusion, the declining enrolment in university science courses is primarily a byproduct of rigorous academic demands and the appeal of more immediate financial rewards in alternative sectors. If left unaddressed, this trend will inevitably compromise national infrastructure, stifle innovation, and trigger economic instability. Ultimately government should promote the science to the youth, so that they can maintain their competitiveness in the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and effects. The ideas are relevant, such as the lack of career counselling and the impact on economic competitiveness. However, the development is slightly uneven. The conclusion introduces a new point—'rigorous academic demands and the appeal of more immediate financial rewards'—which was not mentioned in the body paragraphs. This creates a slight disconnect between the body and the conclusion. To reach a higher band, ensure that all main points are introduced and developed within the body paragraphs rather than appearing for the first time in the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Consequently' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the transition between the second body paragraph and the conclusion is slightly abrupt due to the introduction of new information. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and demonstrates an attempt to use more sophisticated language, such as 'profound societal ramifications', 'financial and developmental stagnation', and 'industrial innovation'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'not opting science as subject' (should be 'not opting for science as a subject') and 'foundational behaviour' (which is slightly unclear in this context). Despite these minor slips, the range is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly and with some precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over complex sentences, such as 'If a student from private school never got proper knowledge... they will generally try to avoid it.' However, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the phenomena that ultimately threatens' (should be 'a phenomenon that threatens') and 'promote the science' (should be 'promote science'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and these errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching the highest band for accuracy.
