Student answer (Band 5.0)

In a large number of nations, students are refusing to choose science to study at university. This essay will consider the reasons for this trend and the possible effects on society.

I think the main reason of this issue is, science as a subject is quite complicated and monotonous. This is because science has too many sectors, and every sectors holds significant values to the society. As a result, students feel heavy pressure to pursue this subject. For instances, in some nations, after eighth grade students has to choose a subject for their higher education, and most of the students go through under-pressure because of the study weight of the science.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely limits the development of ideas. While the essay introduces the topic and attempts to address the causes, the discussion of effects is cut off abruptly after only one sentence. The ideas presented, such as the 'monotonous' nature of science and the 'pressure' students face, are under-developed and lack sufficient supporting evidence or examples. To improve, you must ensure you fully address both parts of the prompt (causes and effects) and provide a complete, balanced argument that meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is too short to demonstrate effective paragraphing or a logical progression of ideas. While there is a basic attempt at an introduction and body paragraphs, the abrupt ending prevents the development of a coherent structure. Cohesive devices are used in a very limited and mechanical way (e.g., 'As a result', 'For instances'). To achieve a higher band, you need to organize your thoughts into a clear introduction, well-developed body paragraphs with topic sentences, and a concluding summary, using a wider range of linking words to connect your ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. You use simple terms like 'complicated', 'monotonous', and 'heavy pressure'. There are also some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'every sectors holds' (should be 'every sector holds') and 'go through under-pressure' (should be 'experience pressure'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to education and societal trends. Focus on using collocations correctly and expanding your range to include less common lexical items that are appropriate for an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains several grammatical errors that hinder clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('every sectors holds', 'students has to choose') and awkward phrasing ('go through under-pressure'). The sentence structures are relatively simple, and there is a lack of complex grammatical forms. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation. Once you are confident with simple sentences, practice incorporating complex structures like relative clauses or conditional sentences to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
