IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, learners give the least preference to the science subject because of its complexity or students' interest issues. However, there are multifarious factors that give birth to this trend and it will adversely impact on society or economy. The upcoming paragraphs will elaborate both in details.
The first and the foremost reason that strikes in my mind is related to hardness of this subject. To explain it, many pupils do not show interest in this subject because they find it hard to understand the complex equations or explanations, as science consists three parts, physics, biology and chemistry, so sometimes, they are not able to do three parts perfectly because they are time consuming and energy taking. Another considerable reason is that might be scholars do not get proper guidance and they do not understand the importance of this subject.
To exemplify, when students are in their primary standards, they may do not properly teach that why science is important for humans. Apart from this, students may get lured by other curriculum activities, like arts, sports, humanities and other.
On the other hand, its effect may prove detrimental not for the society but for the economy also. Firstly, if students do not show interest in science then many of the professions will disappear in the future, for example doctors, technicians, scientists and others because these all fields require a depth knowledge of science. Secondly, our economy has to suffer also because those persons who have the knowledge of science can invent any new development and this directly impacts the recognition and prestige of ones nation.
To conclude, from the aforementioned information it is lucid that science may not prefer by the students because of the complexity it holds, but learning science is important for many professions or for maintaining the prestige of country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and effects. The ideas are relevant, such as the complexity of the subject and the lack of guidance as causes, and the impact on professions and the economy as effects. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why science is 'hard' is a bit repetitive, and the link between science education and national prestige could be more deeply explored. The position is clear throughout, but the arguments would benefit from more specific, concrete examples rather than general statements about 'doctors' or 'technicians'. Overall, it meets the requirements but remains at a basic level of development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The first and the foremost reason', 'Apart from this', and 'On the other hand'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition between the complexity of science and the lack of guidance could be better linked to improve the overall progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'multifarious', 'detrimental', and 'lucid'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'give the least preference to' instead of 'show little interest in', and 'hardness of this subject' instead of 'difficulty of the subject'. Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'do not properly teach that why science is important'. While the range is sufficient, more precise academic vocabulary would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'science consists three parts' (missing 'of'), 'they may do not properly teach' (incorrect auxiliary usage), and 'science may not prefer by the students' (incorrect passive voice). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor issues with sentence construction. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control over these is inconsistent.
