Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay identifies some causes, such as high tuition fees and limited career prospects, the discussion of the effects on society is almost entirely absent. The ideas are under-developed and lack sufficient supporting evidence or examples. To improve, you must ensure all parts of the prompt are addressed with equal weight and provide a more comprehensive analysis to meet the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear structure. Paragraphing is inconsistent, and the transition between ideas is abrupt. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas logically, making the flow of the argument difficult to follow. For instance, the transition from tuition fees to career prospects is disjointed. To improve, use linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition' to connect your points and ensure each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'not enough students' and 'many other reasons' are used frequently. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'carry burden of tution fee' (should be 'bear the burden of tuition fees') and 'do the part time work'. The range of vocabulary is limited, which prevents a more sophisticated discussion of the topic. Expanding your range of academic vocabulary and focusing on correct collocations would significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('at university', 'in most countries'), incorrect verb forms ('Students either had to have'), and punctuation issues. Sentence structures are largely simple, with few attempts at complex sentences. There are also errors in subject-verb agreement and word order. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct use of articles and prepositions, and practice incorporating complex structures like relative clauses or conditional sentences.
