In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries, limited students are choosing to study science at the university. Majority of the students are preferring to choose different career path apart from science. This situation is caused by the number of reasons such as increasing difficulty level of various courses and a huge amount of competition in the field. Due to this, various effects are caused on the society like decreasing number of professional experts and decline in the development of technology.
One of the main reason of this situation is the increasing difficulties of subjects. This is because with increasing number of technology, the subjects include the large amount of content and knowledge. This becomes difficult for students to study various courses in a limited amount of time. For example, physics course contains a huge amount of knowledge from the history to the current technologies, this becomes difficult for an individual to remember the knowledge of the subject. Another cause is a large amount of competition. In last few years, a significant number of students chose science, which increased the competition in the field. As a result, students may assume that science field will provide them few opportunities in future.
On the other hand, this scenario can cause various effects on the society. Firstly, decreasing amount of students in science field can create lack of professional experts in industries in the future. If students are more keen towards different field, this will create scarcity in the field of science. Due to which this field may undergo slower growth and in turn affects the economy of different countries. Secondly, fewer innovation will occur in science field. If a domain consists of few professional experts, this may lead to fewer discovery in future in a particular domain.
In conclusion, limited students choosing to study science have various causes and effects on the society. This situation can be caused by various reasons such as excessive competition and increasing difficulty level. However, It also effects the society in terms of slower growth of technology and decreasing the number of professional experts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (difficulty and competition) and effects (lack of experts and slower innovation). The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, though some points, such as the claim that science students face 'few opportunities', could be more nuanced. The position is clear throughout, and the structure follows a logical progression. To reach a higher band, ensure that the examples provided are more specific and analytical rather than descriptive. For instance, instead of stating physics has 'a huge amount of knowledge', you could discuss the interdisciplinary nature of modern research as a challenge.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate causes from effects. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reason', 'On the other hand', and 'Firstly' are used to guide the reader. However, there is some mechanical repetition of phrases like 'various effects are caused' and 'this situation is caused by'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow and elevate the score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'limited students' (should be 'few students') and 'increasing number of technology' (should be 'advancements in technology'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. The use of collocations is generally acceptable, but there is a reliance on basic vocabulary that could be replaced with more academic alternatives to demonstrate a wider range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the university', 'the science field') and subject-verb agreement ('One of the main reason', 'fewer innovation'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'Due to which this field may undergo...'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for articles and pluralization would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
