Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries, limited students are choosing to study science at university. The majority of the students are preferring to choose a different career path apart from science. This situation is caused by a number of reasons such as the increasing difficulty level of various courses and a huge amount of competition in the field. Due to this, various effects are caused on the society like a decreasing number of professional experts and a decline in the development of technology.

One of the main reasons of this situation is the increasing difficulty of subjects. This is because with a increasing number of technology, the subjects include a large amount of content and knowledge. This make it difficult for students to study various courses in a limited amount of time. For example, a physics course contains a huge amount of knowledge from history to the current technologies, this becomes difficult for an individual to remember the knowledge of the subject. Another cause is a large amount of competition. In the last few years, a significant number of students chose science, which increased the competition in the field. As a result, students may assume that the science field will provide them with fewer opportunities in future.

On the other hand, this scenario can cause various effects on the society. Firstly, a decreasing number of students in the science field can create a lack of professional experts in industries in the future. If students are more keen towards a different field, this will create scarcity in the field of science. Due to which this field may undergo slower growth and in turn affects the economy of different countries. Secondly, fewer innovations will occur in the science field. If a domain consists of fewer professional experts, this may lead to fewer discoveries in future in a particular domain.

In conclusion, limited students choosing to study science have various causes and effects on the society. This situation can be caused by various reasons such as excessive competition and increasing difficulty level. However, it also affects the society in terms of slower growth of technology and decreasing the number of professional experts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (difficulty of subjects and competition) and effects (lack of experts and slower innovation). The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the discussion on 'difficulty' and 'competition' could have been supported with more specific, nuanced examples rather than general statements. The position is clear throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is explored with greater depth and analytical detail rather than simply restating the premise.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons', 'On the other hand', and 'Firstly' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is a tendency to repeat phrases like 'this field' or 'the society' which affects the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary like 'scarcity', 'innovations', and 'domain'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is noticeable repetition of basic words such as 'field', 'students', and 'science'. Additionally, there are minor collocation issues, such as 'limited students' (should be 'few students') and 'increasing number of technology' (should be 'advancement of technology'). Expanding the range of synonyms and collocations would help elevate the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'This make it difficult' (subject-verb agreement), 'a increasing number' (article usage), and 'Due to which this field may undergo' (sentence fragment). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a lack of control over more complex grammatical structures. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with accurate punctuation and conjunctions.
