Student answer (Band 6.0)

For the successful development of a country it is considered essential for it to have a high number of valuable workers like engineers , scientists , doctors and many more jobs related to science. But in many countries the students are straying away from science related courses at educational institutions. I will discuss the probable causes of this phenomenon and the potential effects of this in my upcoming writing paragraphs.

There are many causes of this trend among students but the most important factor is the perceived difficulty of science subjects. To elaborate further, science subjects are often seen as difficult and in fact are hard for many students to study. This can be attributed to the way by which these subjects are taught , these subjects are often taught in a nonintuitive and complex manner , which should not be the case because science is supposed to be intuitive and simple. This is supported by the research done by ‘English Times’ in the United Kingdom which asked school students from all over the country a simple question that was ‘ what is the most boring subject in school ‘ and an overwhelming 59% of students answered ‘Science’

This will have very negative effects on the future of the society because as said earlier , the strength and development of a country relies on the amount of people which have valuable jobs like doctors, engineers, scientists and many more majority of which require a thorough understanding of science. If students are not choosing science as a subject in universities then it will result in fewer numbers of these professions which in turn will result in development of the country being slowed down. The consequences of these was seen in Uganda in 1989 when the country had only 1 doctor for every 100,000 people during a disease outbreak and it was not able to help the people.

In conclusion, i think there is a serious need for a change in the way of teaching science in schools and other educational institutions so that the students realize the importance of science and the applications of it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes (perceived difficulty and teaching methods) and the effects (societal development and professional shortages). The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the reference to the 'English Times' survey and the historical context in Uganda. However, the development is somewhat limited; the argument regarding teaching methods could be expanded further to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, and the response maintains a formal tone appropriate for an academic task. To improve, ensure that the link between the causes and the specific effects is more deeply explored with more nuanced analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To elaborate further', 'This can be attributed to', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of phrasing (e.g., 'valuable jobs like doctors, engineers, scientists and many more'). Improving the variety of cohesive links and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would elevate the score. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'educational institutions', 'phenomenon', and 'consequences'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat basic descriptors like 'difficult' and 'hard'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise academic collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'valuable jobs', consider 'essential professions' or 'critical roles'. The spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary needs to be more sophisticated to demonstrate a higher level of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation (e.g., spaces before commas) and article usage (e.g., 'the amount of people which have'). There are also some minor errors in subject-verb agreement and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on refining your use of complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent accuracy in punctuation and article placement.
