Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern era, with the development of technology, people or students are focusing on various career options rather than focusing on a particular subject like science in their graduation. In the upcoming paragraphs, I will discuss the reason behind this change and how does it affect society.

In past time, science was considered as the main subject, but now this trend has been shifted to various other streams. Firstly, an increase in competition is one of the reasons. Due to the surge of students who are taking science in science field, the supply was more but demand was less. For example, if a country does not require more persons related to science field but they have a lot of students with the same qualification, then the demand will be less, leading to more competition as well as unemployment.

Secondly, change in interest. Due to technology and advancement in various fields, students are starting to develop more interest in other courses, which are equally important as science. Also, technology helps the students to be aware of various fields which they did not know earlier.

However, there can be significant effects which can be caused due to a sudden change in this trend. If all the students will start to take other courses rather than taking science, it may lead to a lack of doctors and engineers, and scientists. These professions are the building blocks of society as they play a significant role in the world. For example, if there will be fewer doctors than before, the mortality rate will increase. Infrastructure will not be created if engineers are not available, which would not be possible. Scientists who make vaccines also play a crucial role. So, there is equal importance of these professions along with other professions.

To conclude, focusing on a particular field will cause a great trouble for running a society smoothly as every course plays an equal role. However, the change in trend is due to a change in interest and competition among students. In addition, the effects of this shift can be a lack of science professionals in society, who are very crucial for society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (competition and changing interests) and effects (shortage of essential professionals). The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding 'supply and demand' in the science field is a good starting point but lacks specific evidence or a deeper explanation of why this competition specifically deters students. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, restating points rather than synthesizing them. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced examples, such as discussing the impact of high tuition costs or the perceived difficulty of science curricula, rather than relying on general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the causes, then the effects, and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In addition'. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For example, the phrase 'In the upcoming paragraphs' in the introduction is unnecessary. Additionally, some sentences within paragraphs lack smooth flow, such as the repetitive structure in the fourth paragraph regarding the importance of doctors and engineers. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring better sentence-to-sentence cohesion would enhance the overall readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'mortality rate', 'infrastructure', and 'qualification'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat basic words like 'field', 'subject', and 'important'. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'In past time' (should be 'In the past') and 'surge of students who are taking science in science field' (redundant). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and avoid repeating the same nouns and verbs throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include: 'how does it affect' (should be 'how it affects' in a subordinate clause), 'In past time' (missing article), 'if there will be fewer doctors' (incorrect conditional tense usage), and 'which would not be possible' (vague reference). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and more accurate conditional sentence structures will significantly improve your accuracy.
