Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a unpopular students' choice to follow their study paths by science. This essay will explore the underlying reasons of this trend and determine the effects it has on society.

In today's globalized world, it is a quite widespread case, when a future student chooses IT or humanities to study at university. one primary reason of it might be a growing demand in IT sphere. For example, large corporations often offer a wide average of new vacancies and the bigger a company, the more employees required. Furthermore, the vast majority of professions in IT are paid better than in other fields. Another motivation to avoid choosing scientific career may lye in school curriculum and teaching methods. Pupils often find scientific subjects boring, challenging or useless. This can be due to unwillingness of teachers to motivate and encourage children to study. Moreover, school curriculum can burden students' lives by obliging them to learn complex things. Therefore, students are unwilling study science owing to bad associations from their school time.

This trend can lead to several issues connected to the science development and employment. First of all, unpopularity of scientific studies leads to a shortage in scientific researches and breakthroughs that can slow down developments in many areas. Another issue is that demand remains, but there is not supply. There are a wide range of open scientific vacancies and not those, who respond to them. This can also affect economic development and indicators of unemployment.

In conclusion, it is noticeable that scientific professions have a significant influence on national economy. To prevent the possible challenges in future, schools should motivate children and instill interest in science, whereas the governments should create the attractive conditions for scientific workers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (career demand, school curriculum) and effects (slowed innovation, economic impact). The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'school curriculum' is mentioned but could be supported with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion is a bit brief and could have better synthesized the main points. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'First of all' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'not those, who respond to them' is unclear). Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the causes to the consequences, which provides a coherent structure throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'globalized world' and 'instill interest'. However, there are several instances of awkward collocations or word choices, such as 'unpopular students' choice', 'wide average of new vacancies', and 'not those, who respond to them'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision and sophistication of the writing, keeping it within the Band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'unwilling study science' (missing 'to'), 'scientific researches' (research is uncountable), and 'lye' (spelling error for 'lie'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some awkward phrasings that affect the flow. The range of structures is sufficient, but the frequency of errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, as the control over complex structures is not yet consistent.
