Student answer (Band 5.0)

I agree to the statement above, many students are not taking up science as a course currently. Reasons could be that most students want to do what they want without thinking about the future. It has been noticed that most of the students are blindly following what their peers are doing in universities. Without making informed decisions about there lives and that of the benefit of the nation.

It is also true that they have rights and they want to make use of them, but at the expense of the future? Facts are that students are still figuring out life and they need support from experienced people. The teachers and lectures have a role to play in guiding the young ones on how to pick careers. Others feel science is difficult and others feel it's boring and that is were guidance comes in.

Students should be encouraged to live to subject and be informed of the importance of studying it. They should be told the advantages of science to the world. For example medicine is there because of science, sick people can be saved through production of a variety of medicines. Weapons are also made through science, we get to protect our nations if threatened by intruders. If the students are ladies we can talk about beauty products, all those are made through science, they can actually discovered more if interested.

Finally, we need to put in more effort as societies in helping young ones embrace the subject and yearn to want to learn more about it for the benefit of the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt—causes and effects—but the development is superficial. The causes are attributed to peer pressure and a lack of guidance, which are relevant but not fully explored. The effects are mentioned briefly, such as the importance of medicine and defense, but the link between low science enrollment and societal impact is not sufficiently analyzed. The essay relies on generalizations rather than providing a structured argument. To improve, you should expand on the consequences of a shortage of scientists, such as the impact on technological innovation or economic growth, and provide more academic depth to your reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is often disjointed. While there is an attempt at logical progression, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the causes and the effects is abrupt. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'that is were guidance comes in,' where the antecedent is ambiguous. To achieve a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' 'in contrast') to connect sentences and ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally basic and repetitive. You rely on simple phrasing like 'do what they want' and 'young ones.' There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'live to subject' (likely meaning 'love the subject') and 'actually discovered more.' The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and topic-specific terminology related to education and societal development.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'teachers and lectures have a role'), misuse of homophones ('there lives' instead of 'their lives'), and punctuation errors. The sentence structure is often fragmented, which affects the overall readability. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct use of pronouns and possessive adjectives, and proofreading for common slips in verb tense and spelling.
