IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The no of countries not enough students are interested to study science at university.

In firstly, the students don't have awareness on science background in universities because they don't have good guidlines . Coming in childhood days the schools are not providing the practical knowledge on the subject so that is one of the reason and coming to the second reason there is lot of unsuccess ratio after our graduation because if we want to develop any company there is a lot of need of the man power comparing to the other works. For example if we go with pharma industry almost there work depend on the man power it is to much of risky. Like these there is a lot of reasons etc.

The effects it have on society is mainly in the medical field because it is one of the basic need of every human in the society. If go on one relevant example that is if any one them is suffering with AIDS means there is lack of medicine in our society that means there is lack of science students in our society And if we go on another example Doctors there is a lot accident deaths in day to day life because lack of the doctors in the hospital .In hospitals they don't have the knowledge doctors. Coming to ISRO satellite centre there is a very less no.of scientists comparing to the other field. There is one of the best example is Covid Pandemic year there is a lot of deaths in society.

I conclude there is a very huge amount of fees for the science students comparing to the other groups/branches in the university and also there is lack of guidlines in science group.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt (causes and effects), but the development is inconsistent. While you identify reasons like lack of practical knowledge and high costs, the explanations are often fragmented or unclear. For example, the link between 'unsuccess ratio' and 'man power' in the pharma industry is difficult to follow. Similarly, the effects on society are mentioned, but the examples regarding AIDS and accident deaths are not well-integrated or logically connected to the shortage of science students. To improve, ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that your examples directly support your main argument rather than listing loosely related points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear structure. There is no introduction that paraphrases the prompt, and the conclusion is abrupt, introducing a new point (high fees) rather than summarizing the main arguments. Paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related ideas. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical or repetitive way, such as the frequent use of 'In firstly' or 'Coming to'. The progression of ideas is often disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow your line of reasoning. Using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') and ensuring each paragraph focuses on one clear theme would significantly improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'no of countries', 'good guidlines', and 'very huge amount'. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'unsuccess ratio' instead of 'high failure rate' or 'lack of the doctors' instead of 'shortage of doctors'. Some terms are used incorrectly, which occasionally impedes the clarity of your message. To reach a higher band, you should focus on learning collocations (words that naturally go together) and using more academic vocabulary appropriate for an IELTS essay, rather than conversational or informal expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often affect readability. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The effects it have'), article usage (e.g., 'in the medical field'), and sentence structure (e.g., 'if any one them is suffering with AIDS means there is lack of medicine'). Many sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation, which makes the text feel fragmented. While you attempt to use complex structures, they are often faulty. Focusing on basic sentence construction—ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb—and proofreading for common errors like pluralization and verb tense consistency will help improve your score.
