Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes for the decline in science students and the effects on society. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. The causes are identified as the perceived difficulty of subjects and the allure of technology, which is relevant. The effects are discussed in terms of economic and health impacts. While the ideas are relevant, the explanation of the 'effects' is slightly disjointed, particularly the transition between economic concerns and medical advancements. The position is clear, but the supporting examples, such as the frog research anecdote, are a bit anecdotal and could be more analytical to better suit an academic task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from causes to effects. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Furthermore, trends are drastically shifting over the periods, due to technology new advancements.' Referencing is generally clear, but some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'leaning towards technology is easy' and 'make themselves early influential.' Some terms are used incorrectly, such as 'science subjects helps patient' (should be 'helps patients') and 'denying choosing it' (should be 'avoiding it'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it does not demonstrate the flexibility or control required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('there are significant causes which is dramatically changing') and incorrect verb forms ('not opted for a science subjects'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in article usage and sentence construction. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band, as the control over complex structures is inconsistent.
