Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt (causes and effects), but the development is inconsistent. While you identify reasons such as the practical nature of science and differing passions, the explanations are often superficial or unclear. For instance, the claim that students are not intelligent enough to define science is an over-generalisation that lacks logical support. The discussion on effects is largely off-topic; you focus on parental pressure and individual feelings rather than the broader societal impact of a lack of science graduates (e.g., economic stagnation or technological decline). To improve, ensure your ideas are fully extended with relevant examples and maintain a focus on the societal, rather than purely personal, implications.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, but they are frequently mechanical or misused, such as the repetitive use of 'Another cause is that' and 'The next cause is that'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of your argument. For example, the transition between the causes of not studying science and the effects on society is abrupt. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, central topic sentence that connects logically to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. You rely on basic terms like 'science', 'subject', and 'study' throughout the text. There are also frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'science is the subject where students should do regular practical' and 'this will be not flexible by choosing science'. Some phrasing is unnatural, which occasionally impedes the reader's understanding. To improve, try to incorporate more academic vocabulary related to education and societal trends, and pay closer attention to how words are combined in English sentences to ensure they sound natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Students loves', 'all the sutudents are not'), incorrect article usage, and punctuation errors. Additionally, there are several spelling mistakes, such as 'sutudents', 'difffernt', and 'country’s'. These errors are noticeable and sometimes make the text difficult to read. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and pluralisation, before attempting more complex structures. Proofreading for common spelling and punctuation errors would also significantly improve the clarity of your writing.
