Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Science plays a significant role in modifying the society. Over the past few decades, scholars are neglecting science as their higher education subject. I shed some light on the reasons behind this as well as suggest some relevant remedies to cure this concern.
To embark on, there are several causes why students do not prefer studying science. The first and foremost is, science is considered hard. To illustrate, it requires strong mathematical and analytical skills which most of the students fear owing to this, they prefer subjects in which they can score well. Moreover, due to lack of practical exposure and encouragement, they may lose interest in scientific subjects. Additionally, influence of peers and society has adverse effects on their mindset, consequently they follow trends rather than pursuing a realistic career.
This problem can have numerous detrimental effects on society. The most prominent effect is, shortage of researchers which can consequently slow the discoveries and innovations. Despite this, a nation may face economic downfall as dependence on foreign expertise or technology may increase. In the addition, technological advancements may suffer in fields of medicine, engineering, environment and other industries. Also, scientists are needed to address climate change, pollution and resource management and lack of them can lead to environmental hazards.
To conclude, it can be said that science plays a crucial role at a global level as well as in daily lives. Scientists cure various problems with the help of their exceptional skills. Every society needs scientists to improve their lives so students should be encouraged towards science.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and effects. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the causes (difficulty, lack of encouragement, peer influence) are clearly identified, the discussion of effects is more comprehensive. The introduction mentions 'remedies,' but the prompt did not ask for solutions, which makes this part of the response irrelevant to the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that all ideas are directly linked to the specific questions asked (causes and effects) rather than introducing unrequested content. The position is clear, but the overall development could be more balanced between the two main requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects. Cohesive devices such as 'To embark on,' 'Moreover,' and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'Despite this' in the third paragraph, which does not logically connect to the preceding sentence about the shortage of researchers. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between ideas could be improved with more sophisticated linking phrases to ensure a smoother progression of arguments.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for clear communication. There is an attempt to use topic-specific terminology like 'analytical skills,' 'technological advancements,' and 'environmental hazards.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'cure this concern' (remedies do not 'cure' concerns) and 'modifying the society' (which sounds slightly unnatural). The range is sufficient for the task, but to achieve a higher score, the student should aim for more precise and varied collocations to express ideas with greater sophistication and naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'scholars are neglecting science' (should be 'students'), 'To embark on' (should be 'To begin with'), and 'In the addition' (should be 'In addition'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some comma splices and missing articles. While the errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring higher accuracy in basic grammar and article usage would significantly improve the score.
