Student answer (Band 7.0)
Introduction
In many countries today, fewer students are choosing to study science subjects at the university level. This is becoming a major concern worldwide. There are several reasons behind this trend, and it brings significant negative effects on society.
Causes
First, science subjects like physics, chemistry, and mathematics are often considered extremely difficult and demanding. Many students feel that these courses require long hours of study and intense effort compared to other subjects. Second, subjects in business, technology, or social media management often seem more attractive because they promise faster career growth, flexible jobs, and higher starting salaries. Lastly, a lack of engaging teaching methods and modern lab equipment in secondary schools can make science seem boring to young learners, turning them away from pursuing it further.
Effects on Society
This decline has serious consequences for society. The main issue is a shortage of qualified professionals, such as medical researchers, engineers, and scientists. Without enough experts, scientific progress slows down, delaying important developments like finding new medical treatments or discovering clean energy solutions. Furthermore, a country with fewer scientists becomes heavily dependent on importing technological tools and knowledge from other nations, which weakens its economy and global standing.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the high difficulty level of science courses and the attraction of other careers are the primary reasons students avoid science majors. however To protect technological progress and national growth, governments and universities must encourage students by offering scholarships, improving teaching methods, and highlighting the real-world value of scientific careers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt—causes and effects—clearly and logically. The introduction sets a clear position, and the body paragraphs provide relevant, well-developed ideas. For instance, the discussion on the 'shortage of qualified professionals' and the subsequent impact on 'scientific progress' and 'economic standing' is well-reasoned. The ideas are extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points and offers a forward-looking suggestion. The response is balanced, and all aspects of the prompt are covered with sufficient detail to support the arguments presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Second', 'Lastly', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there is a minor punctuation error in the conclusion ('however To protect...'), which slightly disrupts the flow. Despite this, the overall structure is coherent, and the use of referencing is generally clear. The essay maintains a consistent focus throughout, demonstrating a good command of organizational features.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is appropriate for an academic task and demonstrates a sufficient range for the topic. Phrases like 'major concern', 'demanding', 'qualified professionals', and 'technological progress' are used accurately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, such as 'pursuing it further' and 'heavily dependent', which adds precision to the arguments. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks the sophisticated, idiomatic, or highly precise collocations that would characterize a higher band score. Nonetheless, the word choice is consistently accurate and never impedes communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with many error-free sentences. For example, the use of conditional-like structures ('Without enough experts, scientific progress slows down') is handled well. There are very few grammatical errors, though the capitalization error in the final paragraph ('however To') is a minor slip. The punctuation is generally sound, and the control over complex structures is sufficient to convey ideas clearly. The majority of the text is error-free, reflecting a strong command of English grammar.
