Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary societies, it has been seen that a large number of students prefer to study non-science courses resulting to only a few students going for science related disciplines, this is due to the fact that most students believe that science is complex. This can result to lack of adequate manpower in required areas later in the future. These points will be explained properly in the following paragraphs with relevant examples followed by a logical conclusion.

To begin with, science is indispensable in today’s world and it requires hard work and dedication. Most students prefer to go for non-science related subjects because they believe that studying scientific courses will be difficult. They generally want to spend their time doing other recreational activities that do not require intense brainstorming than engaging in scientific studies, which can be more challenging. For instance, a student preferring to major in Arts in other to avoid researches.

Furthermore, when a fewer number of people study science courses, there will be a reduce number of persons available to fill major scientific and technological position in prominent organizations especially when those occupying these spaces retire or can no longer serve in the capacity that they use to. For example, a manufacturing company putting out vacancies for certain positions and only a few number of applicants are qualified to fill these areas. This limits the range of options available to the company and can subsequently reduce effectiveness of such organization.

In conclusion, students prefer to go for courses that are not science related, because they believe that science can be complex and difficult to comprehend, and this can result to lack of needed personnels to occupy various areas. It is therefore necessary, to encourage students to explore science courses in order to create a balance later in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (perceived difficulty of science) and effects (shortage of skilled manpower). However, the development is somewhat limited. The ideas are presented clearly but lack depth; for example, the explanation of why students avoid science is repetitive, and the example of a manufacturing company is quite generic. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, nuanced examples or explore the societal impacts beyond just organizational staffing, such as the broader economic or technological consequences for a nation. The position is clear throughout, but the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'those occupying these spaces' which is a bit vague. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the essay maintains a coherent flow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. You use some appropriate academic terms like 'indispensable', 'contemporary', and 'disciplines'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'resulting to' (should be 'resulting in'), 'reduce number' (should be 'reduced number'), and 'personnels' (personnel is already plural). The range is sufficient to convey your meaning, but the lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary prevents a higher score. Focusing on correct collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'resulting to only a few students' (preposition error), 'preferring to major in Arts in other to avoid researches' (fragmented sentence and incorrect usage of 'researches'), and 'capacity that they use to' (tense error). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly clunky. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and verb tenses.
