Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that in several countries, students are not selecting science to study at higher education. This essay will discuss the reason behind it along with its effects on society in detail in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, there are various reasons behind not choosing science subject at university. First of all, in recent times, students are more likely to follow their passion instead of choosing difficult subjects for higher education. This is because, science requires more understanding and focus to solve equation. whereas, if student follow his passion, they may learn easily and fast. For example, according to a survey conducted by National Sample Survey Office, in 2025, in India, on ten thousand students, it was observed that around 75% of students study according to their interest instead of studying hard subject like science and mathmatics. In addition, another cause of this is that students are not aware of long-term benefits of studing science. To explain, now students want rapid growth and money, so they go with proffessional courses which requires less time as compared to science subject. for instance, if a student pick a proffessional course like BBA, BCA, it take around one year to complete that course after which a student get a simple job. Moreover, science subject degree requires 3 to 5 years to get a good job.

Furthermore, not choosing science for higher education can effect on society. First and foremost, new innovation and researches may stop. To elaborate, if students do not pick science subject, there will be shortage of scientists in the future, with which will effect whole country because researches will stop and no new innovation will take place, despite of this, it will also effect on country economy. for example, in South Africa, If there will be no new technology, people will not buy anything which effect on growth of country.

In conclusion, there are various causes and effects of not chossing science at university, this issues requires immedeate attention from higher authorities as well as from individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and effects. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. You provide specific reasons for the decline in science enrollment, such as the pursuit of passion and the desire for rapid career growth. The effects on society, specifically regarding innovation and economic growth, are also clearly identified. However, some arguments could be more nuanced; for instance, the claim that professional courses take only one year is a generalization that could be better supported. Overall, the position is clear, and the task requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive. The use of referencing is generally clear, though there are minor issues with sentence-level flow, such as the awkward phrasing 'despite of this, it will also effect on country economy'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects, which helps the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'innovation', 'professional courses', and 'higher education'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'mathmatics', 'proffessional', 'studing', and 'immedeate', which occasionally distract the reader. Additionally, there are some word choice inaccuracies, such as using 'effect' as a verb instead of 'affect'. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the persistent spelling and collocation errors prevent a higher score. Expanding your range of academic collocations would improve your precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, they often contain grammatical errors, such as 'if student follow his passion, they may learn easily' (subject-verb agreement) and 'with which will effect whole country' (incorrect relative clause usage). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors with capitalization after periods and comma usage. Despite these errors, the meaning is usually clear, and the errors do not significantly impede communication. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help raise your score.
