Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Science plays an important role in the development of growing countries. There is a trend for students to study science subjects from year to year . Now, in many countries, not enough students are selecting to study science at universities. With growing advancements and research in each sector of study, there is a vast variety of related branches available for students to study. All existing types have their own pros and cons for society.
For example, we will shed light on the field of computer science. Over the past years, only two types related to computers existed : computer science and software engineering. Most students came from different places to seek admission. Only these two branches had a dramatic influx of students. Many of them did not gain admission and tried to find other related fields. Nowadays , with extensive research and work in the area, new fields such as artificial intelligence, computer networks, data science , and data mining have been invented. Students come with their ambitions and interests and get registered in their desired fields .
Similarly, this trend has also been followed in other fields like arts, mass communication , and history, etc.. Universities strive to facilitate students across a majority of fields . Hence, we see a dramatic change in the number of students who have not selected science.
On the other hand , with the subsequent increase in different fields and varying numbers of pupils, there is a great impact on society. This relieves students of stress ; they feel more courageous about their studies because they have found what they wanted. They bring innovation to their fields . For example, artificial intelligence helps blind people use mobile phones with voice notes. In the healthcare sector, doctors now operate on patients using advanced organic medicines developed with the help of experts in homeopathy .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt but struggles with focus. While you identify causes (the diversification of academic fields), the explanation of why students are choosing other subjects is somewhat tangential. You focus heavily on the history of computer science rather than the broader reasons for the decline in science enrollment. Furthermore, the effects on society are only partially addressed; you mention innovation but do not fully explore the negative consequences of a lack of science graduates, which is a key part of the prompt. To improve, ensure you explicitly answer both parts of the question—causes and effects—with balanced, direct arguments rather than descriptive examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between the causes (the rise of new fields) and the effects (innovation) is abrupt. While you use some cohesive devices like 'For example' and 'Similarly', the flow between sentences is often mechanical. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the third paragraph where the connection between the rise of other subjects and the decline in science is not explicitly linked. Improving the use of linking words to show contrast and consequence would help the reader follow your argument more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advancements', 'influx', and 'facilitate'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'growing countries' (usually 'developing countries') and 'not selected science' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). You also rely on some repetitive structures. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid informal phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are frequent errors in punctuation and grammar, such as unnecessary spaces before commas and periods (e.g., 'year .', 'Nowadays ,'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'Students come with their ambitions and interests and get registered in their desired fields'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for punctuation and refining sentence structure will significantly improve your accuracy.
