Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes for the decline in science students and the societal effects. The ideas are relevant, such as the perception of science as 'challenging' and the reliance on theory over practical application. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on societal effects focuses heavily on technology and healthcare but could be more nuanced regarding long-term economic or research impacts. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis remains at a general level rather than fully exploring the implications of the trend.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'In addition to this', and 'Consequently', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, although the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition between the difficulty of science and the lack of practical experiments is a bit abrupt. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the reader can follow the argument without significant difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'innovative technology', 'medical equipment', and 'critical thinking'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward word choice or minor errors, such as 'science subject' instead of 'science subjects' and 'make people life' instead of 'make people's lives'. The use of less common lexical items is infrequent, and some phrasing is repetitive, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('science is challenging subject'), article usage, and verb forms ('students must to cultivate', 'If student will not study'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in sentence construction that occasionally require the reader to re-read for clarity. The range of structures is sufficient to communicate the ideas, but the frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents a higher score.
