Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0
The response fails to address the specific topic of students choosing science at university. Instead, it discusses a vague, undefined 'problem' or 'issue' that is never clearly identified. The essay reads as a generic template that could apply to almost any topic, as evidenced by phrases like 'the problem of study science' and 'deal with students are choosing university'. Because the core task—explaining the causes of a decline in science enrollment and its societal effects—is not addressed, the response is largely irrelevant to the prompt. The ideas are not developed, and the position is unclear.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
While the essay uses basic paragraphing and some cohesive devices like 'To begin with' and 'To conclude', the logical progression is severely hampered by the lack of relevant content. The sentences often do not follow logically from one another because the subject matter is incoherent. Referencing is also problematic; for example, 'this issue' and 'this problem' refer to nothing specific, making the text difficult to follow. The structure is mechanical and fails to guide the reader through a coherent argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is extremely limited and repetitive. The student relies on generic phrases such as 'negative impact', 'alarming rate', and 'effective measures' throughout the text. There is no attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to education, science, or university enrollment. Word choice is often awkward or incorrect, such as 'the problem of study science' instead of 'the decline in science enrollment'. The range is insufficient to express complex ideas.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. There are significant issues with sentence structure, such as 'one of the main factors contributing to students are choosing university', which is ungrammatical. Subject-verb agreement and word order are often incorrect. While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, they are frequently faulty and lack control. Punctuation is generally functional, but the underlying grammatical foundation is weak, leading to frequent errors that distract the reader.
