IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, several countries experience shortage of students who are choosing to study science courses at university. There can be a lot of reasons why this happens but I believe the two main reasons are the number of requirements needed to be able to qualify for science courses and expensive tuition fees.

Science courses have a lot of entry requirements and high qualifications just to be able to study the course. They require higher grades that can be hard to obtain which can discourage potential students. Secondly, science courses can be quite expensive in addition to it requiring more years of study. Not a lot of people have the capacity to pay for tuition fees. As a result to that, students would rather prefer courses with cheaper tuition fees and less years of study requirements.

Due to those reasons, it can affect the future employment. Science courses like nursing, therapists, or other medical related course are a huge help in our society. Without those professionals, our society will struggle. For example, shortage in medical professionals can lead to burnout as this job requires more hours of work and can took a toll in our mental health. Also, the demand in medical field kept on rising as years go by.

In conclusion, science courses should be more attainable for students. Universities should offer scholarships that can attract students to study science courses. It should also be easier to access and cheaper as it can be beneficial for our society in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (entry requirements and tuition fees) and effects (impact on society and employment). The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention that science courses are expensive, you could have elaborated more on why this is the case or provided a more specific example of how this affects university enrollment numbers. The discussion on effects is relevant, but the link between the shortage of professionals and the specific impact on society could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all parts of the task sufficiently.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Secondly', 'As a result to that', and 'In conclusion', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as 'As a result to that' (should be 'As a result of that'). Referencing is generally clear, but the progression of ideas could be smoother with more varied linking words to avoid a repetitive structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'tuition fees', 'entry requirements', and 'medical professionals'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler vocabulary. There are also minor errors in collocation and word choice, such as 'medical related course' (should be 'medical-related courses') and 'took a toll in our mental health' (should be 'took a toll on our mental health'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and collocations to demonstrate a wider range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'shortage of students' (should be 'a shortage of students'), 'less years of study' (should be 'fewer years of study'), and 'can took a toll' (should be 'can take a toll'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do show a lack of consistent control over complex structures. Increasing the accuracy of subject-verb agreement and pluralization will help improve your score in this criterion.
