IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In most of the countries, a significant number of students are not opting for science subjects at universities. This is happening because of lack of job opportunities in the future and learners do not have interest in this subject. This will have a positive impact on society.

One primary reason is the dearth of future job opportunities. Nowadays, many learners are unable to get jobs after graduation in science subjects due to increase competition among the graduates and less number of jobs. As a result, many graduates whether have to change career or remain jobless, making them feel stressed. Second main reason is that students are not passionate about pursuing their career in science. They find other disciplines such as computer sciences and arts more interesting, which then encourages them to choose a path they find appealing. Therefore, learners will progress more in their favorite fields because they feel motivated throughout the journey.

One major effect is that when students choose other subjects which are unfamiliar to others, they can easily get employments as their is less competition. These days, many students after learning some skills are getting online jobs at a good income. This leads them to support themselves and pay tax to governments, which then be reinvested in the public welfare. Additionally, many learners who work in their interesting fields are often the main reasons for any breathtaking innovations. These new software, apps and technology are developed by the graduates who find this field attracted. These new developments can be used for the benefit of society by making the lives of residents easier such as fedora app allows people to order food online if they have busy schedules.

In conclusion, in many regions not many students are choosing to study science because of lack of interest and future opportunities. It is a positive trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and effects. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention 'lack of job opportunities' and 'lack of interest' as causes, the explanation of the effects is slightly contradictory; you argue that students choosing other subjects is a 'positive trend' because they can find online work, but you fail to address the societal implications of a potential shortage of scientists, which is the core of the prompt's concern. The position is clear, but the analysis lacks depth and fails to fully explore the negative societal consequences of a decline in science graduates.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'Therefore', and 'Additionally' to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the causes and the effects could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Overall, the structure is coherent, but the use of cohesive devices is not always sophisticated or flexible enough to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'dearth', 'disciplines', and 'breathtaking innovations'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'less number of jobs' (should be 'fewer jobs'), 'as their is less competition' (should be 'there is'), and 'find this field attracted' (should be 'attractive'). These errors do not impede communication, but they limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using collocations more accurately and expanding your range of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'in most of the countries', 'due to increase competition', 'which then be reinvested'). Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'many graduates whether have to change career or remain jobless'. While these errors rarely impede communication, they indicate a lack of control over more complex structures, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band score.
