Advice for Next Attempt

Your essay demonstrates a clear attempt to address the prompt, and you have successfully met the length requirement. Your main strength lies in your ability to structure your ideas into paragraphs and provide relevant examples. To improve, focus on three key areas: first, ensure your introduction directly addresses the prompt's specific wording to avoid being off-topic. Second, work on your grammatical accuracy, specifically subject-verb agreement and verb forms, as these errors are frequent. Third, expand your vocabulary by learning academic collocations rather than relying on simple, everyday language. Try to read high-quality academic articles or model IELTS essays to see how complex ideas are linked and expressed with precision. Finally, always leave 3-5 minutes at the end of your exam to proofread your work for small errors like 'porpoise' vs 'purpose' or 'has' vs 'have', which can easily be corrected.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0

The response fails to address the prompt entirely. The task asks for the causes of students not choosing science and the effects on society. The student instead writes about the general benefits of science (e.g., climate change, education, healthcare). Because the essay does not answer the specific question asked, it is off-topic. While the student provides some ideas, they are not relevant to the prompt's requirements. To improve, you must carefully analyze the prompt and ensure every paragraph directly answers the specific questions posed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak because the content does not follow the prompt. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Apart from this', 'In addition', and 'To sum up', but they are often used mechanically or to connect irrelevant ideas. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow between sentences feels disjointed. To improve, focus on ensuring that each paragraph has a clear central topic that directly relates to the prompt, and use linking words to show logical relationships between ideas rather than just listing points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic terms. There are several word-choice errors, such as 'life acceptance' instead of 'life expectancy' and 'study porpoise' instead of 'study purpose'. The range is insufficient to express complex ideas with precision. To reach a higher band, you should focus on learning collocations and academic vocabulary. For example, instead of 'find out this solution', use 'devise solutions' or 'mitigate the impact'. Proofreading is essential to catch spelling errors like 'therefor' and 'porpoise'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'a country face' instead of 'a country faces' and 'many hospitals has' instead of 'many hospitals have'. Verb forms are also frequently incorrect, such as 'science has greatly improve' instead of 'science has greatly improved'. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at complex sentences are often marred by errors. You need to focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly verb tenses and agreement, before attempting more complex structures.
