In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Higher education has always been considered a crucial part of any high functioning society, especially studies of science, due to the vital knowledge that is obtained from such studies. However, many countries nowadays observe less intrest in science , whether it's due to the widespread missinformation that the new generation is being exposed to or the challenging nature of scientific studies. This may have terrible implications on society. This essay will discuss the causes and effect of this phenomenon.
One of the reasons for the lack of intrest in studying science is the natural hardships that students encounter in these studies. Many students divert from choosing medicine or biology as their major due to the well known difficulties that are expected. Furthermore, most of these studies are time consuming and often regarded as a barrier for being able to enjoy the young adult years. For instance, I studied medicine and saw many of my colleagues quit in the first year stating that medicine is time consuming, exhausting and impposible to handle.
Another reason is that many students currently are leaning into a more artisic pathway or even not persuing higher education due to the widespread missinformation about gaining a fortune through social media or crypto trading. Nowadays, with internet being widely availabe, alot of young students are being influenced by different people on their future, with many of them advicing and convincing them that higher education is a waste of time, particularly scientific majors.
Such disinterest in science can produce catastrophic consequences. One of which is the lack of qualified medical doctors, which if severe can cause the collapse of the healthcare system and result in the spread of diseases. In addition, the collapse of scientific research can halt advances in medicine or any other field of science. Moreover, the possibility of spreading missinformation can become easy if there is no one to fact check the information being distributed.
Ultimately, scientific studies should remain a pivotal study treted with the upmost importance to be able to maintaine a society with the highest standards and provide a comfortable living for all members of society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (difficulty of studies and external influences like social media) and effects (healthcare collapse and lack of innovation). The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. However, the development of the 'effects' section is slightly less detailed than the 'causes' section. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, real-world examples of how scientific innovation has stalled due to these trends, rather than relying on general statements about the 'collapse of the healthcare system'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', 'In addition', and 'Ultimately'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the effects, which helps the reader navigate your argument effectively. Overall, the structure is sound and supports the development of your ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'pivotal', 'catastrophic', and 'phenomenon'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'intrest' (interest), 'missinformation' (misinformation), 'impposible' (impossible), 'persuing' (pursuing), 'advicing' (advising), 'treted' (treated), and 'maintaine' (maintain). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, improving your spelling accuracy and using more sophisticated collocations would help you achieve a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, such as 'Many students divert from choosing medicine or biology as their major due to the well known difficulties that are expected.' However, there are recurring grammatical slips, such as 'with internet being widely availabe' (missing article 'the') and 'alot' (should be 'a lot'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some minor issues with spacing around commas. The errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
