Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many nations, fewer students choose to study science at the university because these subjects are very hard to study and schools often teach them through boring lectures. There are a myriad of its causes and its effects on the society. This essay tends to analyze the causes of this and its effect on the society, including my inclinations in the ensuing paragraphs.

Examining the causes of the enrollment of fewer students to choose science at the universities. As far as my opinions are concerned, the foremost reason behind this is that the science subjects are very hard to study and schools and universities often teach them through boring lectures, without any hands-on learning. Though, these subjects involve complex theories, heavy math problems and a long hours of study. In addition to this, students view these science subjects in terms of career with a very different perspective. According to the students, non-science subjects are less difficult to study and the non-science jobs pay better and requires less effort than the science subjects. Therefore, very few students choose to study science in the universities.

Moving towards the effects of fewer students choosing to study science at university, on the society. It has a considerable effect on the society. Due to the enrollment of less students in science subjects, there would a huge shortage of experts as there will be a lack of graduates in the society, which results in fewer doctors, engineers and researches. Moreover, it leads to a slow innovation, due to shortage of scientist, there will be less progress in medical cures and technology. Therefore, its is very serious issue and it could have a great impact on our society.

To conclude, it can be firmly commented that enrollment of fewer students in science subjects at the universities, have various causes and can have a significant impact on the community. But this issue can be resolved, if the schools and colleges give more importance on the enhancement of student's interest by focusing more on hands-on-learning rather than just academic lectures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes (difficulty of subjects, teaching methods, career perceptions) and the effects (shortage of experts, slow innovation). The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the second paragraph where the same points are restated. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your examples or provide more nuanced explanations rather than repeating the same concepts. The introduction is slightly awkward, specifically the phrase 'including my inclinations', which does not fit the context of an academic essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition to this', 'Moving towards', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Moving towards the effects... on the society'. Additionally, there are instances where referencing is slightly unclear, such as the use of 'its' in the opening paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the flow between sentences could be improved to sound more natural and less like a list of points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'innovation', 'enrollment', and 'experts'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat words like 'subjects', 'study', and 'society' frequently. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'give more importance on' (should be 'to') and 'a long hours of study' (should be 'long hours of study'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and varied academic collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'there would a huge shortage' (missing 'be'), 'its is very serious issue' (article error), and 'enrollment... have various causes' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are unnecessary commas, such as in the final paragraph. The control of grammar is inconsistent; while you attempt complex structures, the frequency of errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
