Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and effects. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the causes (outdated syllabus, complexity, digital distractions, and alternative career paths) are clearly identified, the discussion of the effects on society is less balanced. The conclusion presents a somewhat contradictory view by labelling the decline as 'significantly positive' due to personal passion, while only briefly mentioning the negative impact on scientific progress. To reach a higher band, the essay needs a more nuanced exploration of the societal consequences, such as the long-term impact on technological innovation or healthcare, rather than focusing primarily on individual career choices.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'These are two reasons which explains such kind of trend'. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the phrase 'related to it', where the antecedent is not explicitly defined. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the transition between the causes and the societal effects could be smoother to improve the overall progression of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'research and development', 'conventional methods', and 'instrumental industry'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'pursuing with science faculty' (should be 'pursuing science') and 'impacted the quality to remain patient' (should be 'impacted the ability to remain patient'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient for the task, but the lack of precision and occasional awkward phrasing prevents it from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('education sector has became', 'science plays... will be greatly affected'), incorrect verb forms ('has became a trend'), and missing articles or prepositions ('decline in its popularity', 'impact for science'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of these grammatical slips is noticeable. To improve, the student should focus on basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentence structures are constructed with greater accuracy.
