Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays the number of learners who choose to studying science at university has reduced in many countries. The main reason behind this trend is nowadays students are moving to vocational program and want to study easy subject, though this aspect has negative impact on society.

Vocational training can help pupils to get their job earlier. As it is a skilled base degree students get skills in a particular topic, so they can manage their job easily. Moreover, science is known as a sophisticated subject. Since this generations juveniles are lethargic and try to gain things in the shortcuts or easiest way to succeed, they choose more convenient programs in university. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (vocational training, preference for easier subjects) and effects (lack of technological proficiency, economic downturn). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the claim that students are 'lethargic' is a broad generalization that lacks nuance. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly extended with more specific, logical examples. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, but the overall depth of analysis remains at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level, as the ideas are presented but not fully explored in an academic manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'In conclusions' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as 'To illustrates' (should be 'To illustrate') and the repetitive use of 'Nowadays' at the start of sentences. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'skilled base degree' (should be 'skill-based'), 'this generations juveniles' (should be 'this generation's youth'), and 'not ample scholars' (should be 'not enough students'). While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'vocational training' and 'economic downturn', the overall range is limited. Frequent errors in word formation and collocation occasionally impede the flow of reading, though the meaning remains clear throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('this would be bring', 'which will leads to'), incorrect article usage, and awkward phrasing ('By reducing the science background students'). While the student attempts complex structures, these are often marred by errors. Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of grammatical slips is high enough to suggest that the student has not yet mastered complex sentence control.
