Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by briefly discussing the causes of low student enrollment in science and the resulting societal effects, such as slowed technological and economic progress, as well as unresolved climate challenges. However, the ideas are underdeveloped and repetitive, lacking sufficient supporting details or fully articulated examples. Furthermore, the response suffers from a significant length penalty, as it falls short of the mandatory 250-word minimum by being only 224 words long. This places the response in the Band 5 category, where the task is only partially addressed due to limited development and length constraints.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The text lacks proper paragraphing entirely, appearing as a single, dense block of text, which severely hampers the overall logical flow and structural progression. While there are basic attempts to connect ideas using words like "another effects" and "which", cohesive devices are frequently inaccurate, repetitive, or poorly managed. Referencing is also unclear at times (e.g., dangling pronouns and disconnected clauses). There is no clear overall progression of argument, which is characteristic of the Band 4 descriptor, though the presence of some basic logical sequence prevents it from dropping lower.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms like "science subject", "society", and "effects". There are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as "slow technologically slow economic growth" and "scientist new discover". Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success and numerous word-form errors (e.g., using "discover" instead of "discovery"). These limitations represent a restricted range that occasionally strains the reader, aligning closely with the Band 4 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent punctuation and capitalization errors, such as missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences (e.g., "the cause is", "science is"), run-on phrases, and incorrect fragment sentences like "slower progress is also. the effect of society slower progress mean..." These pervasive errors cause frequent strain on the reader and distort meaning at times, fitting the Band 4 descriptors.
