Student answer (Band 5.0)

Science is considered as toughest subject to study. Most of the young students do not like to choose science stream for their higher education. I would like to discuss causes as well as effect of not studying science subjects.

The first and foremost point is student choose subject for their higher studies. The study of science is hard as compared to other subjects like arts, commerce and vocational. For instance, science is practical based subject which includes mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Hence, it give pathway to become doctor or engineering. Secondly, It is long term study rather than study of arts subject. Students study for about eight to night hours, also scarifices their sleep. Surprisingly, there is huge competition in science background due to less number of seats.

The other major reason is hard to afford. Studying science is quite expenive as compared to other subject. The recent survey shows that people take lakhs of loan to study science. Consequently, it is not easy to study science for normal to moderate belonging families. In addition, students needs to appear for entrance test such as JEE or NEET examinations to get the seat in science stream. Although, students scarifices multiple things such as parties, hangout and family time to achieve the seat.

As a result, time and money both matters equally to take science for further education. Students become to strong to study like science subjects because it require more concentration and determination.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying causes such as the difficulty and high cost of studying science, and briefly touching on effects like competition and career pathways. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times unclear, as seen in the final paragraph where the discussion of societal effects becomes muddled. Furthermore, the response falls short of the 250-word minimum, containing only 243 words. This negative constraint violation restricts the fullness of task completion, placing the overall achievement within the Band 5 descriptor range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some logical organisation with a clear attempt at paragraphing to separate causes and details. However, overall progression is hindered by abrupt transitions and faulty referencing, such as starting paragraphs with vague cohesive markers like 'The first and foremost point' and 'The other major reason'. Cohesive devices are sometimes used inaccurately or repetitively, and referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'Students become to strong to study like science subjects'). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires better management to achieve a smoother flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, though it is often repetitive and basic. The student attempts some less common terms and subject-specific vocabulary like 'vocational', 'practical based', and entrance exams ('JEE or NEET'), but these are marred by frequent word choice and collocation errors (e.g., 'toughest subject', 'normal to moderate belonging families', 'lakhs of loan'). Spelling errors such as 'expenive', 'scarifices', and 'hangout' also occur. The range is minimally adequate, fitting the Band 5 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty or ungrammatical. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('student choose', 'students needs'), missing articles ('is long term study', 'to get the seat'), and awkward phrasing ('Students become to strong to study like science subjects'). These frequent errors can cause occasional difficulty and distraction for the reader, aligning the grammar with a Band 5 score.
