In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
IN MANY COUNTRIES, NOT ENOUGH STUDENTS ARE CHOOSING SCIENCE TO STUDY AT UNIVERSITY. STUDENTS ARE ENROLLING IN SKILL DEVELOPMENT COURSES RATHER THAN THEORATICAL ONES. THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT PLAY THE ROLE IN CHANGING THE INTEREST OF THE STUDENTS AND THERE ARE MAJOR CONSEQUENCES OF THIS.
IT IS DUE TO THE REASON THAT PEOPLE ARE NOW GRAVITATING TOWARD ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT STUDIES. SOCIAL MEDIA HAS A MAJOR ROLE IN CHANGING THE INTEREST OF THE STUDENTS. STUDENTS ARE AIMING TO GET PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE IINSTEAD OF MEMORIZING LAWS AND THEORIES IN SCIENCE. SCIENCE SEEMS TO BE BORING TO THEM. FOR INSTANCE, THE CHILDREN SPEND THEIR MAJOR TIME IN PLAYING THE GAMES AND USING THE AI TECHNOLOGY, LEADING TO CHANGES IN THEIR INTERESTS.
ANOTHER MAJOR FACTOR OF THIS IS THAT THE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES ARE RESTRICTED IN THIS FIELD. PEOPLE ARE EARNING FROM REMOTE JOB BY DEVELOPING SKILLS. WITH ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ROBOTS ARE TAKING THE JOBS OF HUMAN, WHICH MAKE THEM INCLINED TO THE COMPUTER RELATED FIELDS.
THE CHANGES IN THIS REGARD HAVE MAJOR EFFECT ON THE SOCIETY. IT LEADS TO THE LACK OF RESEARCHERS IN MEDICAL AND OTHER RELATED FIELDS. NOWADAYS, WE ARE FACING MANY CHALLENGES SUCH AS EMERGING DISEASES, GLOBAL WARMING AND MANY OTHER THREATS TO HUMAN LIFE, IF THE RESEARCHERS CONTINUE TO DECREASE WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COPE SUCH CHALLENGES.
TO CONCLUDE, THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD DEVELOP NEW EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AND RESEARCH FUNDINGS FOR RESEARCHERS. THE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES SHOULD HELD AWARENESS SEMINARS AND COMPAIGNS TO INCREASE THE INTEREST IN THE YOUNG GENERATION. THE UNIVERSITIES SHOULD OFFER OPPORTUNITIES TO STUDENTS WHO VOLUNTARILY DO RESEARCH ACTIVITIES SUCH AS AWARDING THEM WIOTH SCHOLARSHIPS AND MONEY PRIZES.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying causes such as the rise of artificial intelligence, skill development courses, and limited employment opportunities, alongside societal effects like a shortage of medical researchers and the inability to tackle global challenges. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for example, the connection between social media and students abandoning science is mentioned briefly but not fully extended with specific examples. Nevertheless, the main requirements of the task are appropriately covered. The writer successfully provides reasons and relevant societal implications, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing causes and effects, and a concluding recommendation section. Overall arrangement is coherent, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases feel abrupt, and referencing can be imprecise, such as using 'this' without clear antecedents. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes repetitive or basic. Paragraphing is present and separates main ideas appropriately, but internal paragraph flow could be smoother to reach higher band levels.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts at less common lexical items such as 'gravitating toward', 'employment opportunities', and 'global warming'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('THEORATICAL', 'IINSTEAD', 'WIOTH', 'COMPAIGNS') and occasional word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'held awareness seminars' instead of 'hold'. The range is sufficient to communicate the main points clearly, but frequent mechanical errors in spelling and collocation prevent the score from reaching a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('if the researchers continue to decrease we will not be able to cope such challenges'). There are several noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues and missing prepositions ('playing the games', 'take the jobs of human', 'cope such challenges'). Punctuation is also erratic, with the entire response typed in capital letters. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to restrict the score to Band 5.5.
