Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing the causes of fewer students choosing science and the effects this has on society. The writer identifies the popularity of vocational courses as a primary cause and outlines various societal effects such as reduced unemployment and increased living standards. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, with sweeping generalisations and a slightly unclear position regarding the direct impact of technology versus vocational courses. Despite these shortcomings in depth and full extension of ideas, the prompt is sufficiently covered to meet the requirements of Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is organised into clear paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs addressing causes and effects, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression is hampered by heavy reliance on mechanical and repetitive cohesive devices, such as 'This can be' and 'This can'. Referencing is frequently unclear, and punctuation errors disrupt the flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal logical transitions are weak, leading to choppy phrasing. These issues place the response firmly at Band 5.0, where organisation is present but overall progression lacks clear logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited vocabulary with noticeable spelling errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'numreous', 'selecating', 'benhind', 'vactional', 'therical', 'invovle', 'knowlegde', 'empolyment', and 'minimazi'. While there is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to education and employment ('vocational courses', 'unemployment', 'living standard'), the frequent lexical errors and lack of precision in word choice restrict the response to Band 4.5, which is rounded to Band 5.0 based on minimally adequate range for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The essay displays a very limited range of structures, dominated by simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex clauses. Punctuation is frequently misused, particularly with comma splices (e.g., 'this situation is create , this can make a very postively imapct'). Grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, missing articles, and incorrect word forms ('skillfull work', 'rate of crime is also decline'). These persistent errors often cause difficulty for the reader and reflect the descriptors for Band 4.0.
