Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing the causes of why fewer students choose science at university and the subsequent effects on society. The position is generally clear throughout the essay, identifying factors such as inadequate resources, rote memorization, and economic factors as causes, and innovation stagnation and skills gaps as effects. However, the ideas lack full extension and suffer from some over-generalization and repetitive points (for example, the reliance on inadequate resources is mentioned multiple times). Overall, the response covers all parts of the task adequately, aligning with a Band 6.0 performance level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and body paragraphs separated into causes and effects. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and repetitive, particularly with the frequent use of transition phrases like 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover' at the beginning of consecutive sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'it have significant impacts' or 'it have scientific knowledge shortage'. Paragraphing is utilized, but the internal logical progression within the body paragraphs occasionally stalls due to the repetitive listing of points without sufficient linking.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'disillusionment', 'stagnation', and 'detrimental'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'other field rather than studying science subjects', 'faced difficulty to excel in their life', and 'disaster impacts'. Spelling and word formation errors also appear, including 'tecachers' and 'cruicial'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly in the Band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability to construct multi-clause sentences. However, there is a high frequency of basic grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement ('it have significant impacts', 'students tends', 'students... faced difficulty') and singular/plural mismatch ('quality tecachers', 'disaster impacts'). Punctuation and verb tense consistency also show weaknesses. These errors persist throughout the text and restrict the score, though communication is generally maintained.
