Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address all parts of the prompt by discussing the causes of the decline in science students and the effects on society, mentioning economic growth and innovation sectors like robotics. A position is stated in the introduction, though the ideas are somewhat repetitive and lack deep development. For instance, the mention of part-time jobs and financial pressure is a good point, but it is not fully elaborated with strong specific evidence. Furthermore, there is a penalty applied because the word count is 238 words, which falls short of the minimum 250-word requirement. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, warranting a band score of 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing a basic structural awareness. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Inconclusion' (spelled incorrectly as one word). However, logical progression is often hindered by abrupt transitions and faulty referencing. For example, the sentence 'Which can harm to nation economic growth as well' uses a relative pronoun fragment incorrectly to start a sentence. Paragraphing is present, but overall the flow is mechanical and sometimes confusing, leading to a band score of 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling mistakes throughout the text. Examples include 'intrest' instead of interest, 'thier' for their, 'revelent' for relevant, 'sevral', 'Chemestry', 'pupil', 'preapration', 'pourcue' (pursue), 'markest', 'Inconclusion', and 'garieer'. While the student attempts some less common academic words like 'innovation', 'civilization', and 'automation', the high frequency of spelling errors and inaccurate word choices, such as 'easy subject like Art and Education' or 'lose their preference from science', significantly strains the reader and restricts the lexical score to a 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on general adequacy of basic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional forms ('If they pourcue their education... they will get...'). However, the writing is plagued by frequent grammatical and punctuation errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('intrest of undergraduates are decreasing', 'learner have to pay'), incorrect preposition usage ('lose their preference from science', 'effect for their garieer growth'), and fragment sentences. For example, 'Which can harm to nation economic growth as well' is a fragmented clause attached incorrectly. Although meaning can mostly be deciphered, the density of structural inaccuracies keeps the grammar score at a 5.0.
