Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the causes of the decline in science students, such as subject difficulty and better financial prospects elsewhere, as well as the effects on society, including a shortage of qualified specialists and slower technological development. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on causes relies heavily on general statements like 'science subjects are difficult' without providing deeper elaboration. The position is stated, although the introductory and concluding remarks contain formulaic expressions such as 'this essay will discuss further many causes and effect', which detract slightly from the natural flow of argument. Overall, the task is adequately addressed, aligning well with the expectations of Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division of paragraphs addressing introduction, causes, effects, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'The first and the foremost one', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore', though some of these are used in a somewhat mechanical or slightly unnatural fashion, such as 'Therefore, this para concludes the causes'. Referencing and substitution are generally clear, but punctuation errors around conjunctions and commas (e.g., 'undoubtedly ,that many countries') disrupt the smooth progression of ideas at times. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thematic blocks, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'biotechnology', 'renewable-energy systems', and 'qualified scientists'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'concurrent world' instead of 'contemporary world', 'refusing to study science' instead of 'declining enrollment in science', and 'not not study science'. Word formation and spelling errors occur (e.g., 'student' instead of 'students', 'studied' instead of 'study'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from rising into the higher bands, making Band 5.5 or a solid 6.0 appropriate. Given the successful use of some less common terms, a score of 6.0 is justified.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and clause structures. Examples include 'many countries not enough students are choosing' (missing verb/copula), 'a lot of student face difficulties to studied it' (pluralization and infinitive errors), and intrusive commas before dependent clauses (e.g., 'undoubtedly ,that many countries'). Furthermore, run-on structures and comma splices are present throughout the text. Although the meaning remains generally clear, the high frequency of basic and complex structural errors places the performance firmly in the Band 5 category.
