Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring the causes behind the decline in science students and the resulting effects on society. The writer attempts to develop ideas, such as the lack of career orientation and the shortage of healthcare workers in developed countries like the United States and Canada. However, some arguments lack full extension and suffer from generalisations or abrupt transitions. For instance, the discussion on societal impacts focuses heavily on healthcare professionals, which is relevant but somewhat narrow. The position is clear throughout, and the main prompt requirements are met, placing this response solidly in the band 6 category.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is generally coherent with an overall logical arrangement, though paragraphing and mechanical errors disrupt the flow. While paragraphs are used to separate the introduction, causes, effects, and conclusion, internal cohesion is sometimes faulty. There are issues with referencing, missing punctuation, and run-on sentences, such as 'Personnel attaining science ourses at university are falling day by day. This essay will highlight the reason behind it...' Cohesive devices are used, but their application is occasionally awkward or repetitive. Progression is visible, but the lack of precise linking phrases and mechanical punctuation errors keeps the cohesion at a band 5 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic ideas about education and healthcare shortages. However, there are frequent spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'relected' instead of 'related', 'ourses' instead of 'courses', 'leves' instead of 'leaves', 'towers' or 'thers', and 'avalizable'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success, and collocation is sometimes unnatural, as seen in 'future scopes' or 'drastic reduce'. These errors do not entirely impede communication, but they are noticeable throughout the text, corresponding to a band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising subordinate clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, and word forms (e.g., 'citizen geting ill', 'meet there rising needs', 'goverment should establish'). Punctuation is a major issue, with multiple instances of missing spaces after full stops and missing commas in complex sentences. While communication is not totally obscured, the density of errors places the grammar firmly at a band 5 level.
