Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding the causes of fewer students choosing science and the effects this has on society. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times unclear. For instance, the discussion on causes shifts abruptly from artificial intelligence to average study skills and financial constraints, such as the personal anecdote about a friend named Jawad. While the effects on society are touched upon through references to the economy and medical needs during the COVID-19 pandemic, the arguments remain under-developed and lack depth. The position is sometimes difficult to follow due to disjointed reasoning. Overall, the response meets the criteria for Band 5.0 as it addresses the task partially with limited and under-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some structural organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used, though paragraph boundaries and internal structures are somewhat erratic. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive, with sentences often stitched together without clear logical links, as seen in phrases like 'On this point all the countries do the antidots'. Referencing is also confusing at times, such as 'his wish is to addmit in science university but they didn,t afford it and they admission in computer field'. Consequently, the progression feels disjointed, aligning the response with a Band 4.5 or 5.0. Rewarding the overall attempts at structure, a score of 5.0 is appropriate.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'dysfunctional factors', 'paramount importance', and 'antidots', but these are often misused or awkwardly collocated. There are also numerous word-choice and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'intersting', 'Todays', 'addmit', 'compueter field', and 'negitive'. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for conveying simple thoughts, but frequent inaccuracies constrain the score to a Band 4.5, rounded to a 5.0 for overall effort in attempting topic-specific terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures. While there are a few attempts at complex sentences, they are almost invariably faulty and poorly constructed, such as 'Enough students in the science universities it is the negitive for country economy.' There are frequent errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and article usage throughout the essay, for instance, 'students also in recently years the artificial intelligence are become very popular'. These persistent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader and obscure meaning in multiple places. This performance aligns closely with the Band 4.5 descriptors, earning a 4.5 overall for grammar.
