IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?

Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In universities many learners debate about selection of science subjects in majority countries. One of the cause would be the difficulty of understanding or getting low grades as students thinks it will be more time consuming. It can effect the society as there will be no medical awarness or it can lead to the shortage of medical health professionals with increase number of mortality rate.

Firstly, students select less time consuming subjects as they can get a bachelor's degree with less effort. For example, for medical studies there would be more practicals and learning on hand or clinical sessions which makes them to study or go through their studies daily so they get the knowlegde or learn things with the flow.

Secondly, they want to enjoy their university life rather than studying as it's their great time by passing their high school and getting their favourite subjects without future perspective. Although making them just to enjoy their new life with new friends having their own will.

Consequently, it can effect the society by getting low number of medical gradutes in different aspects. For instance, if there is a road traffic accident or any emergency and their is no awarness of first aid and no one knows how to handle the situation making the mortality rate high. Furthermore, to avoid these type of accidents we need to educate more health professionals, so we can treat the morbidity with quick response. More health professionals can lead to more hiring making less chance of injury or deaths.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes of declining science enrollments and the effects on society. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, the writer mentions that students fear getting low grades or find science 'time consuming,' but this point is not fully extended. Similarly, the effects on society focus heavily on a single domain—healthcare and medical emergencies—rather than providing a broader overview. While a clear position is established, the arguments remain somewhat basic and under-developed, aligning best with a Band 5 or Band 6. Because the ideas are relevant but lack depth and variety, a Band 5.5 is appropriate for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some logical organisation with basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'Consequently.' However, the overall progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and abrupt transitions. Paragraphing is attempted, but the body paragraphs contain run-on sentences and unclear referencing. For instance, phrases like 'making them just to enjoy their new life with new friends having their own will' lack clear logical connection to the surrounding sentences. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally confusing (e.g., 'their is no awarness'). This level of logical flow and paragraph structuring corresponds to a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for discussing university subjects and society. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'majority countries' instead of 'most countries,' 'medical awarness' instead of 'medical awareness,' and 'medical gradutes.' Some phrases are imprecise or incorrectly collocated, such as 'treat the morbidity with quick response.' While the vocabulary allows the writer to convey basic points, frequent errors in spelling and word choice cause some difficulty for the reader, placing this response firmly in the Band 5.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('if there is a road traffic accident... and there is no awarness...'). However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, marred by grammatical errors, punctuation issues, and missing articles. Examples include 'One of the cause would be' (subject-verb agreement error), 'as students thinks' (verb form error), and 'there is no awarness of first aid and no one knows how to handle the situation making the mortality rate high' (run-on sentence with dangling participle). Because frequent errors cause difficulty and limit the range of error-free structures, a Band 5.0 is warranted.
