IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries not enough students are choosing to study science at university. What are the causes of this? What effects does it have on society?
Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
University is the hub where people from their state or people from different state or different country comes in order to pursue their higher education. There are different departments and different fields and students need to choose that in which stream they need to go. Previously majority of students were choosing science but currently we can see a drastic reduction.
Currently, students are choosing to study commerce, arts or biology rather than studying science at university. There are certain causes of this reductance and the main reason for this is Aritificial Intelligence. Nowdays people are using AI in order to make their website and all and it thus reduces the jobs of the programmer. Let's take an example in order to understand the impact of AI on many industries. Suppose in an IT company if a project is allocated to a company then they need 10-15 resouces in order to complete that project but nowadays it got reduced to 3-5 resources because of the automation in various fields. So it has affected the job market for the people who are pursuing science.
This trend can have several negative effects on society. Firstly, a shortage of science graduates may lead to a lack of skilled professionals in areas such as engineering, healthcare, research and technology. This can slow down scientific development and make countries more dependent on foreign expertise. Secondly, fewer students entering scientific fields can reduce innovation and the development of new technologies. For instance, countries need a sufficient number of scientists and engineers to develop solutions for problems such as climate change, energy shortages and healthcare.
In conclusion, the declining interest in science is mainly caused by concerns about employment, automation and the difficulty of these subjects. If this trend continues, it could result in a shortage of skilled professionals and slower technological progress in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the causes for the decline in science students (such as the rise of Artificial Intelligence and automation) and the effects on society (such as a shortage of skilled professionals and slower technological innovation). The student maintains a clear position throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as how IT companies reduce the number of resources needed for a project. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise slightly in the introduction and some arguments could be further elaborated to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is fully addressed, earning a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It is divided into an introduction, well-defined body paragraphs focusing separately on causes and effects, and a clear concluding summary. The student uses cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion', though referencing and transitions in the second paragraph are slightly mechanical (e.g., repeating 'different' multiple times). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. Because the overall structure is logical and easy to follow, it comfortably meets the criteria for Band 6.5, though minor mechanical cohesion keeps it from Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'automation', 'scientific development', and 'technological progress'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'reductance' (instead of 'reluctance'), 'Aritificial Intelligence' (spelling error), and the repetitive use of 'resources' to mean employees or staff. Less common items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, but occasional word-choice errors place this clearly in the Band 6.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and prepositional use, such as 'people from their state or people from different state or different country comes' and 'Nowdays people are using AI in order to make their website and all'. Punctuation is also occasionally lacking, making some sentences run-on. Because errors are noticeable and recurrent without completely impeding communication, this performance aligns with Band 5.5.
