Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address both parts of the prompt, discussing causes such as challenging subjects, fear of failure, and financial barriers, alongside some societal effects and solutions. However, the prompt specifically asks about the causes of low university enrollment in science and the effects this trend has on society. While the student mentions some causes like financial constraints and perceived difficulty, the discussion on effects is largely missing or conflated with solutions (e.g., providing scholarships). Furthermore, ideas are often under-developed and lack clear progression or relevant real-world examples, relying instead on over-generalised statements and vague hypotheticals like the farmer and his three children. Consequently, the response meets the minimum requirements for content coverage at a basic level, demonstrating an understanding of the topic, but falls short of a fully developed argument. This places the performance firmly at a Band 5.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some organizational structure, with distinct paragraphs attempting to introduce causes and solutions. However, there is a clear lack of overall logical progression, and relationships between ideas are frequently obscured by mechanical or inadequate cohesive devices. For instance, transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' are used, but sentences within paragraphs often feel disjointed and random. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas is erratic, bundling causes, solutions, and unrelated personal anecdotes together without clear demarcation. Additionally, referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought. These issues reflect the descriptors for Band 5, where some organization is evident, but overall cohesion and progression are lacking.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used throughout the essay is basic, repetitive, and heavily constrained. The student relies on elementary words and phrases, while attempts to use less common or academic vocabulary—such as 'dicate', 'inhibition', 'epitome', and 'strim' (stream)—frequently result in severe word-choice and spelling errors that impede communication. For example, 'strim' is used repeatedly instead of 'stream', and terms like 'co-operate' and 'compplete' display poor spelling and lexical control. While the range is minimally adequate to convey a basic message about education and career choices, the high frequency of inaccurate lexical choices and non-standard collocations prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Therefore, a score of 4.0 is appropriate, as errors in vocabulary frequently strain the reader's comprehension.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical structure of the essay is severely limited and heavily flawed. The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but clauses are frequently linked incorrectly or left incomplete, resulting in frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'Education system have wider routes', 'some parents are not capable for paying fees', and 'every parents have diffrent income sources'. Punctuation and capitalization are also widely neglected, with sentences starting with lowercase letters ('this part of essay') and commas used inappropriately. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and distort meaning in several places. Because complex structures are almost always faulty and basic grammatical rules are routinely broken, the writing aligns closely with the Band 4.0 descriptors.
