Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding the causes of fewer students studying science and the effects this has on society. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on causes largely revolves around parental pressure and job opportunities, while the effects touch upon unemployment and stress. The position is generally clear, but some arguments are under-developed, and the conclusion introduces repetitive points rather than synthesizing the main ideas effectively. Consequently, the response aligns best with the Band 5 descriptors, as the task is addressed, but the ideas lack sufficient depth and extension.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay has a basic organizational structure with clear paragraph breaks representing introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing phrasing, such as 'In the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it hard to follow the exact relationship between ideas. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inaccurate or mechanical. While paragraphing is attempted, the overall flow suffers from disjointed sentences and ideas that jump abruptly between topics, placing the response firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'hepls' instead of helps, 'oppurtunities' instead of opportunities, and 'Employement'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary like 'financial income' and 'misunderstanding', but inaccuracies persist, such as 'done there students' instead of completed their studies. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic meanings related to education and employment, the frequent errors and restricted range prevent the response from achieving a higher band, fitting the Band 5 descriptors well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, with frequent errors in basic grammar, tense agreement, and punctuation. Examples include 'University provide' instead of universities provide, 'In this essay will discuss' missing a subject, and 'do have have a job which create a lot of stress and led to financial difficulties' containing multiple agreement and spelling errors. While simple sentences are generally understandable, attempts at complex sentences often result in noticeable structural faults and frequent errors that can cause some difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 5 descriptors.
