Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the main parts of the prompt by discussing both the causes of the decline in science students and the effects on society, such as economic impact and research shortages. However, the ideas are underdeveloped and lack sufficient depth or specific examples. For instance, the writer mentions that studying science is hard and expensive, but these points are explained with very basic generalisations. The position is somewhat clear, but the lack of elaboration and repetitive phrasing prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed, but the development remains limited, fitting the Band 5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, attempting a standard structure with introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor cohesive devices and mechanical referencing, such as starting paragraphs with 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' in a way that does not logically contrast two opposing arguments. Furthermore, sentences are often jammed together with comma splices or missing conjunctions, making the flow disjointed. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak and repetitive, aligning the response with Band 4.5 or 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive throughout the text. Words like 'students', 'science', 'study', and 'countries' are repeated frequently without synonyms or varied collocations (e.g., 'choices', 'academic disciplines', 'nations'). There are also noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that stem from first-language interference or lack of precision, such as 'feild', 'pratical', and 'tend to go development countries'. While the meaning can generally be understood, the limited range and frequent inaccuracies constrain the lexical score to a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 for minimal adequacy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Grammatical control is weak, with a heavy reliance on simple sentence structures and frequent errors in complex structures. The text contains numerous punctuation errors, missing articles (e.g., 'in present day', 'in lab'), tense inconsistencies ('student hasnot join'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('it give pressure', 'government should make low fee'). The majority of sentences contain errors that frequently require the reader to slow down or guess the intended meaning, although overall communication is not completely obscured. This corresponds to the Band 4.5 to 5.0 criteria.
