Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0
The student has failed to meet the minimum length requirement, containing only 156 words compared to the required 250 words. This significantly impacts task achievement as the prompt asks for both causes and effects of students choosing not to study science, yet the response is severely underdeveloped. The writer misinterprets the premise of the prompt, suggesting students are choosing science rather than avoiding it, and largely digresses into personal anecdotes about history books rather than addressing societal effects. Ideas are extremely limited and fail to answer the core questions of the task. Due to the under-length nature of the response and the failure to address the prompt adequately, a low band score is warranted.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The text shows basic paragraphing attempts, but the overall organisation lacks a clear logical progression. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'furthermore also give my opinion' and 'so, its her good efforts'. Paragraph transitions do not guide the reader smoothly through an argument about causes and effects. Referencing is frequently unclear, as seen in phrases like 'this subject' and 'this book' where the antecedent is ambiguous. While there is a rudimentary structure with separate paragraphs, the lack of coherent logical arrangement and poor control of cohesive devices restrict the score for this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
Vocabulary is basic and repetitive, heavily relying on simple words like 'science', 'university', 'subject', and 'history'. There are numerous lexical errors and unnatural word choices, such as 'adopt this subject' instead of 'take' or 'choose', 'found of' instead of 'fond of', and 'busy in searching' instead of 'busy searching'. The range of vocabulary is inadequate for a university-level academic task, and frequent errors in word choice and spelling ('alot', 'convinient', 'informtion') strain the reader's understanding and restrict the score to a lower band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and frequently faulty sentence structures. There are persistent basic errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('student is select', 'also give my opinion'), tense inconsistencies, and incorrect prepositions ('study in science'). Punctuation and capitalization are also poorly handled, with lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences ('she want') and unnecessary commas. The frequency of errors causes significant difficulty for the reader and demonstrates poor control over basic grammatical structures.
